Madrid Noir
– EMMY AWARD WINNER –
VR Experience
Score, Interactive Music, Implementation
This VR Experience is set in Madrid in the 1930s and ’50s and follows the story of Private Investigator Manolo Monreal and his niece Lola who is visiting for the summer. Manolo finds himself deep undercover in a net of fascists elaborating a plan to overthrow the government. Lola will help him solve the case, and the player will be both actor and spectator in the story.
The challenge for this score was to create a Noir/Detective soundtrack, relying on Jazz and jazz instruments, but also incorporating a Spanish flavour to it, that was contemporary.
We consulted musicologists, historians, archivists and other experts of period music to learn what the popular music in the ’30s and ’50s would have been in Madrid, to create a mixture between Spanish folk music, zarzuela and jazz that was understandable for a global audience but at the same time stood away from “clichés” and stereotypical flamenco style.
Madrid Noir is a VR Experience for Oculus Quest, Produced by Oculus Studios, Atlas V and Developed by Noghost Studio London.
Carlos Rodriguez Rodriguez as Lead Composer for Interactive Score and did Audio Implementation in Unreal Engine for this VR Videogame.
